Receipts: Nation-Building, Not Slogans
- Confederation & Nation-Building (Macdonald era): built a country and drove the transcontinental railway to bind it—“the last spike” in 1885 remains a symbol of unity and ambition.
- The Canadian Bill of Rights (1960): Diefenbaker’s ringing pledge—“I am a Canadian, a free Canadian…”—set a national standard for rights and responsibilities.
- Continental Free Trade (1988) & Environmental Leadership (1991): Mulroney delivered the Canada–US Free Trade Agreement and the Air Quality (Acid Rain) Agreement—growth with stewardship.
- Modern Conservative Reforms (2006–2015): GST cut (7→5%), Tax-Free Savings Account to help every Canadian save, and the Federal Accountability Act to strengthen transparency.
